Georgia’s building requirements vary considerably between urban counties and rural areas. Metro Atlanta counties like Fulton, Gwinnett, and Cobb have comprehensive permitting processes while many rural South Georgia counties are considerably less restrictive.

Key things to know:

Most Georgia counties require permits for permanent structures over 200 square feet
Wind load requirements increase in coastal counties like Chatham, Bryan, and Camden
Agricultural exemptions exist in many rural Georgia counties for qualifying farm buildings
